People are Hungry....
And One Good Word Is Bread For A Thousand
Words matter. Truth matters. When language is corrupted and words no longer mean what they once did, the foundations of democracy begin to crack. George Orwell knew it. Hannah Arendt knew it. Survivors of the holocaust and Nazi Germany knew it. Too many of us in this country and in this moment are unaware of how words are being corrupted and weaponized; this lack of awareness is imperiling our lives and the lives of those who come after us.
In the mid nineties, long before this nightmare of Trumpism and the hellscape of social media eroded our collective capacity for reflection and critical thinking, David Whyte, poet and organizational development consultant, wrote this somewhat dated but prescient poem called Loaves and Fishes.
This is not
the age of information.
This is not
the age of information.
Forget the news,
and the radio,
and the blurred screen.
This is the time
of loaves
and fishes.
People are hungry
and one good word is bread
for a thousand.
Did You Know:
There is a new movement emerging out of the collapsing and calcified Democratic Party, and it is a sight to behold. Young, brilliant, competent candidates are winning primary elections in several states and their campaigns don’t have the familiar fingerprints of overpaid political consultants or bloviating pundits smeared all over them.
They call themselves Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), and they are causing quite the stir. While there are several down ballot Democratic Socialists running in 2026, the most recent and national attention getting ones include Zohran Mamdani who became New York City’s first Muslim mayor in November 2025. As the youngest New York City mayor in over a century, he beat the dynastic, moneyed and democratic establishment backed candidate Andrew Cuomo. On June 23, 2026 his endorsed candidates for congressional districts in the NY primary; Darializa Avila Chevalier and Clair Valdez handily won their elections. Mamdani also endorsed Brad Lander, who pushed out two term Rep. Dan Goldman by 30 points! Lander does not officially belong to the DSA wing of the party, but supports their progressive agenda. One week later, Melat Kiros, a 29 year old Democratic Socialist beat out a 15 term establishment Democrat in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District.
The winning candidates are advocating for universal health care, higher minimum wages, an end to the genocide in Gaza, accountability for corporate corruption, and the abolishment of ICE. They are authentic, their message resonates and they are listening to their voters.
Why It Matters:
These recent victories are worrisome for MAGA and the old guard entrenched party Democrats. Both parties are weaponizing words to their own benefit. The overly cautious, centrist leaning, establishment insiders of the Democratic Party are saying that these progressive candidates are too left leaning for voters and will be viewed as radical socialists. Instead of hand wringing, they could choose to support these candidates and help their base understand how important this movement is to building a big tent that welcomes a plurality of voters. MAGA cult leaders and vulnerable GOP MAGA incumbents are referring to this new generation of democrats as radical communists as a fear mongering tactic in hopes of inciting their base.
We need a collective civic vocabulary lesson so we understand what is happening and can effectively push back against the lies and misinformation. There is too much at stake in the upcoming midterm elections to not understand these terms and what they mean for our democracy.
Here are a few good words for those who are hungry for truth and clarity in these obfuscating times.
Did You Know:
Socialism is primarily an economic system that is intertwined with political ideology. Socialism spans a broad spectrum of economic and political ideas. In democratic societies, socialistic policies are centered on the belief that the economy should serve society as a whole rather than corporations or an elite few of the most wealthy and powerful.
It’s helpful to think of socialism in three broad categories, the primary distinctions being the degree to which capitalism exists, how democracies operate and who ‘owns’ the economy.
Democratic Socialism
Social Democracies
State Socialism
State Socialism: Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea
In this form of economic socialism there is significant government involvement. The government owns the economy, markets are replaced by a central planning. Private businesses are limited or prohibited. The governments decide what will be produced and how much production occurs. The government decides prices, wages, and investments. Elections may or may not be democratic. The ultimate goal of this form is to replace capitalism.
Social Democracies: Norway, Sweden, Finland
This form is considered a ‘mixed economy’ model. In this model, there are free markets with elements of social programs. Many key industries are publicly or cooperatively owned, such as health care, roads, utilities, postal services. Markets exist along side public ownership. Private businesses are encouraged with regulation. Elections exist. The ultimate goal is to shift economic power to public ownership.
In this model, there are strong labor unions, universal healthcare, and generous social insurance. Taxes are relatively high but with extensive public service.
Democratic Socialism: Found in many democracies
This is the model that voters in many recent elections around the country are enthusiastically embracing. In this model, ownership of business is mixed; public ownership occurs only when considered necessary. Markets exist along with public ownership. Think of it as capitalism with guardrails. Private businesses are broadly encouraged but must abide by regulations that keep them honest, accountable and serving the broader community as well as their shareholders. Elections are required, they must be free and competitive. The ultimate goal is to reform capitalism to make it more equitable.
Our current form of government already includes many economic aspects of this model. Easily recognized examples are Social Security, Medicare, farm subsidies, public schools, public libraries, public roads and public fire departments.
Trump and his MAGA loyalists are conflating democratic socialism with communism. They are using the ‘red scare’ tactic because they are certain that their cult followers will have no idea what it means except it is ‘bad and scary’. The irony is that Trump, aided and abetted by Congress, is rapidly consolidating power and working to centralize the economy. He is the poster child of a cruel communistic dictator with NO economic or civil protections for common people. He is gaslighting the country.
China, North Korea and Vietnam are communistic countries. Their economic models are similar to state socialism, their political ideology is authoritarianism. When a government concentrates wealth and power into the hands of a few, it leads to the wide spread human rights abuses and it deprives individuals of personal freedom and economic choice.
MAGA is taking our country down a path to an authoritarian rule, state controlled production and the concentration of wealth and power into the hands of a few. Trump and his acolytes want a single party rule. They wear a red hat.
What You Can Do:
Take the time to understand these distinctions. When the subject comes up with friends and neighbors, be able to explain the difference in a conversational way. Democratic Socialists are not trying to replace capitalism, just reform it so it works for everyone. They believe in democracy, not fascism, communism or authoritarianism. Not every candidate needs to be a Democratic Socialist, they just need to listen to the voters and promise to work for them, not their donors.
And let’s be clear. The Democratic Party isn’t infighting, it’s transforming. This is what it looks like when a new energy is emerging and breaking out of obsolete structures, attitudes and beliefs. We need a party that works to recruit and elect candidates who will fight for the people. It’s a winning strategy.
Semantically yours,

Thanks for writing this! I appreciate your efforts to educate. Your definition of democratic socialism is incorrect, though. Democratic socialists are to the "left" of the social democrats you mention in Scandinavia. We democratic socialists absolutely do want to replace capitalism with public ownership of the government and economy! We just believe that's possible to do alongside free speech, free expression, and free elections. There's more good info here:
